Baby Thrall On A Stick

Forums are now sort-of-working again. Teaches me to read my goddamn e-mail after fucking upgrading the damned thing.

Anyway, the new portal has been updated with the draft manifest and raid information. Installed some snazzy plugins and will hopefully be able to integrate Joomla with a new phpbb3 forum.

I know, I know…I wouldn’t want to get rid of the stuff in the old forum–but at this point it might be better to start fresh so that the website integration works without a hitch.

We shall see.

And yeah, I’m going crazy. ARGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

Retirement…? Not Just Yet It Seems

Because I need to solve the DKP/website/ventrilo before I do. And the goddamn forums are down because I tried to update it. D’oh!

Officers, here’s the “draft” I just wrote about the proposed DKP system after the break. For members, note that this is still in progress–everything will be clear in a couple of weeks.

The Curious Case of the Missing GM

Well, I’m back. Not with good news though.

In short, I’m quitting WoW.

I’ve entertained the thought of managing the guild while juggling my RL situation throughout the past half-year or so, but to be honest it’s not happening. I’m getting married, I want to advance in my career, and there are many goals in life I want to achieve.

After listing them all, I realized WoW isn’t on the list.

I will be online periodically throughout this week, and passing on the GM role coming Sunday. More information later regarding how this will affect the website, forums, and vent.

Naxx-10 Clear!

Finally fucking cleared the fucking raid–just in time for Ulduar too.

I’ll be doing the standard guild maintenance soon once the realms are back up.

Guild Drama: Read Here

Those of you who are involved in guild drama involving certain people who have /gquit , let me say this simply:

Do not get involved in other people’s RL situations. Anyone who does gets a /gkick, no exceptions. No taking sides, no judging others based on what you think you know.

That is all. You know who you are.

The Naxx-10 Conundrum

It looks like things are shaping up: Dead Or Alive has hit a new milestone last week.

What is it? A full in–guild Naxx-25 run! Thank you to Inexista and the various PUGs that have come in to replace those having latency and availability issues.

Here’s our current progression status:

  • Naxx-10: Spider Wing, Military Wing, Plague Wing cleared, 1/4 Construct Wing.
  • Naxx-25: Spider Wing and Military Wing cleared, 2/4 Plague Wing, 1/4 Construct Wing.
  • Obsidian Sanctum: 0 drakes up cleared on Normal and Heroic.

This has been a great week! Good job all!

I will update this post soon with new loot rules on PUGs and alts.

The Battle Plan

The great news is that this week we have accomplished a lot, with the help of some PUGs (cheers guys, couldn’t have done it without you!), some which has joined us (welcome, by the way!).

We did OS-25 (0 drakes up), 25-man Vaults, and even rolled through Naxx-25 Spider Wing and wtfpwnt Instructor Razuvious and Gothikk the Harvester!

This proves that as a guild, we can do 25-mans now. And we will try to push through 25-mans on Fridays and Saturdays–this will be led by Boow.

Which brings us to the next question: “what will happen to the 10-mans? We still haven’t cleared it!”

At this point I have no real answer for you guys. With 25-mans happening on Fridays and Saturdays, this will mean that those who were usually in Naxx-10 Group 2 will end up coming to Naxx-25 instead. What I plan to do is to push through Naxx-10 with a single group, and hopefully concentrate enough to progress–we will do that on Wednesdays and Thursdays. Maybe we can make another group on Sundays or even continue on with our Naxx-10 group–we will see.

In summary, while some people will miss out on 10-mans (especially for Group 2)–they should be able to participate in 25-mans.

Also, I have just tidied up the guild notes and ranks. The “Notes” section has your preferred spec written, as well as your profession levels. If it is not your preferred spec please notify me immediately. You can edit whatever you’d like in the “Officer Notes” for your mains, but please leave everything else the way it is for now.

I will conduct a “survey” to note down your preferred raid times and spec within the week.

The Importance of Staying “Casual”

I’ve stated this many times, <Dead Or Alive> is a casual guild. This is a very important fact to keep in mind–even more so as we edge closer to doing full guild 25-mans and as we slowly crawl up towards clearing Naxx-10.

Believe it or not, having a guild really isn’t hard. IF said guild is a dictatorship.

Which we are not. And this is what gives us our “personality.” We decided to keep the guild going by vote back when we only had ten people in it in TBC, instead of splitting off and joining other raiding guilds. And this is what I would like to maintain: a friendly guild that tries to accommodate most if not all of its members–within reason.

In <Dead Or Alive>, there are exactly four ranks (simplified): Guild Master, Officers, Members, and Inactive Accounts. While we are not a democracy, I strongly suggest each member to contribute by providing feedback. If there’s something bothering you, let me (as GM) or an officer know. If it directly relates to guild rules, the Officers and I will discuss it. I will then decide as GM based on the result of this discussion and take responsibility. This is our decision-making process. And I try to make it as fair as possible.

Now…there are currently a few discussions we have going, which will change the current rules and raid organization/loot distribution as stated in the forums–some of those are:

  • Bringing your Main in raids as an offspec: how does it relate to loot?
  • Bringing your Alt in raids: how does it relate to loot?
  • Rolling on Offspec loot?
  • When should we raid, and who will organize it?
  • The state of the Guild Bank

We should hopefully have already got an answer to these questions by my next post–possibly in three days’ time.

Now, for Guild News–welcome to all who have just joined recently! It came as a bit of a surprise to me, but rest assured we will do all we can to make you feel at home here. And an update: We cleared OS-25 with the help of 5 PUGs! Thank you very much to them, I apologize as I don’t remember all the names… D:

Last, quick head count of the current raid “personnel”–we’ve got 51 level 80s: 44 of those are mains and 7 of those, alts. Role composition is as follows:

  • Tank: 6 mains, 2 alts
  • DPS: 30 mains, 3 alts
  • Healer: 8 mains, 2 alts

Raid Ready: Melee Hit and Expertise

The most important point that might not be obvious to WoW players with melee (and ranged physical) attacks is that hitting the Hit Cap is much more important than anything else. Of course, you will still need to balance Attack Power and Crit%–but being able to achieve the Hit Cap is very important.

Let’s start with the basics here. Here is your chance to miss against a level 83 mob/boss, assuming no modification through talents or gear and using a weapon where you have 400 Weapon Skill:

  • One-handed Melee: 9% miss
  • Two-handed Melee: 9% miss
  • Dual-wield Melee: 28% miss
  • Ranged Attacks: 9% miss
  • Special (”Yellow”) Attacks: 9% miss

Now, you need 32.79 Hit Rating to attain +1% Hit. So, that means you need:

  • One-handed Melee: 295.11 Hit Rating
  • Two-handed Melee: 295.11 Hit Rating
  • Dual-wield Melee:918.12 Hit Rating
  • Ranged Attacks: 295.11 Hit Rating
  • Special (”Yellow”) Attacks: 9% miss

It’s impractical for dual-wielding classes to stack +Hit over 9%, as they will sacrifice lots of other beneficial stats (as mentioned above, AP and Crit to name a few). Not to say that it’s useless over 9%–it’s just good to keep it in mind. This is the reason why dual-wielding classes have specific talents that add to Hit%, those are:

  • Death Knight - Frost: Nerves of Cold Steel (3 ranks, +3% Hit total)
  • Hunter - Marksmanship: Focused Aim (3 ranks, +3% Hit total)
  • Rogue - Combat: Precision (5 ranks, +5% Hit total)
  • Shaman - Enhancement: Dual-Wield Specialization (3 ranks, +6% Hit total)
  • Warrior - Fury: Precision (3 ranks, +3% Hit total)

So, what’s the Hit rating you need to get to +9% to Hit if you do have the above talents? Well, you need:

  • Death Knight - Frost: Nerves of Cold Steel 3/3 - 196.74 Hit Rating
  • Hunter - Marksmanship: Focused Aim - 196.74 Hit Rating
  • Rogue - Combat: Precision - 131.16 Hit Rating
  • Shaman - Enhancement: Dual-Wield Specialization - 98.37 Hit Rating
  • Warrior - Fury: Precision - 196.74 Hit Rating

There you go. To recap, you need +9% to Hit to never miss an attack for non-dual-wielding and special attacks. You need +28% to Hit if you dual-wield…but since that is impractical it’s best that you get to +9% Hit so that at least your special attacks will never miss.

But…what about Expertise?

Simply put, Expertise reduces the chance that you will be Dodged and Parried. A level 83 mob/boss has 6.5% chance to Dodge and 14.25% chance to Parry. Note that ranged attacks and attacks from behind will never be Parried, so Hunters and melee attacks from behind need not worry about the Parry chance. You need 26 Expertise or 214 Expertise Rating to hit the Dodge cap.

One thing to note for Tanks is that Expertise is more valuable than Hit–since if you compare 33 Hit Rating and 33 Expertise Rating, the latter will reduce the mob’s chance to Dodge AND Parry whereas the former will only affect your own chance to hit.

Ergo, for Tanks, increasing Hit and Expertise will also increase your threat generation. Increasing the latter will also increase your own survivability, since less Parry = less damage to you.

To be honest, I am still a bit shaky on how Hit and Expertise is calculated for Feral Druids and Hunters. I have not touched on Spell Hit mechanics as well–hopefully I’ll be able to share some knowledge on this a bit later.

Military Wing Cleared

Well, this is certainly newsworthy. Raid Group 1 managed to clear the Military Wing in Naxx-10, and downed Noth the Plaguebringer! Great job all!

This brings us to another challenge: getting rid of Heigan the Unclean and Patchwerk. The former requires raid coordination and the latter, solid DPS and healing–so I definitely recommend getting acquainted with the respective encounters.

Again, well done! I’ll be away from a week myself, so…play nice! =p
